When the American Queen Steamboat led the Travel Section of the New York Times on Sunday, June 3 (http://tinyurl.com/84rdpkd), one thing not mentioned was the decor. David J. Goldberg, the New Orleans appraiser who did a complete insurance appraisal of the ship’s properties prior to launch, says the steamboat is filled with antiques and collectibles. The highlight is a table valued at $ 60,000 – a fact unknown to the owners before to Mr. Goldberg’s appraisal.
According to David J. Goldberg, the table hardly seems fit for a riverboat. Of course, the American Queen is the largest – 419 feet – paddle wheeler ever built and, perhaps, the most elaborate. Goldberg describes the table as being circular, surmounted by a top of white marble more than six feet in diameter. The top is supported by elaborate mahogany carved scrolling legs. Says Goldberg, “It was the most surprising portion of the appraisal.”
The appraiser surmises the table was shipped to New Orleans from England in the latter part of the 19th Century. Its provenance then faded into history until it was acquired, along with other antiques, during the American Queen’s redecoration.
The American Queen was built in 1995 by the Delta Queen Steamboat Company and cruised the Mississippi before coming upon hard times in 2008. After the United States Maritime Administration took custody of the ship, HMS Global Maritime formed The Great American Steamboat Company to acquire and re-launch the American Queen.
Goldberg, who is Director of The Appraisal Group of New Orleans and a member of The Certified Appraisers Guild of America, is becoming known as the appraiser who identifies the hidden gems.
He was responsible in 2010 for uncovering an Albert Bierstadt painting of the American Northwest in an historic home in eastern Texas and shepherding it through an auction where it fetched over $ 100,000. The owner had previously been told the oil painting was worth about $ 2,500. Even more recently, Goldberg identified a painting of a Louisiana bayou by Southern regional artist William H. Buck. A 1970s tag on the rear of the frame gave it a value of $ 75. With Goldberg’s expert help, it went to a private collector for $ 300,000.
While there are no plans to sell the Anglo-Indian center table, passengers on The American Queen’s Mississippi River voyages will be able to enjoy its splendor, knowing that they are being treated to the finest money can buy.
Mr. Goldberg, who holds degrees from Columbia University and the University of North Carolina, has more than thirty years experience appraising art and antiques. He also owned and operated one of the South’s most well known auction houses and taught a course in the appraisal of antiques at Tulane University for more than a decade.

The Universitys graduate certificate in Global Apparel Supply Chain Management is a 15 credit-hour program that can be completed in a single year. The credit hours earned can be applied towards a Masters if a student later chooses to pursue an advanced degree.
Both programs are supported by the Bryan Schools 20-member Consumer, Apparel and Retail Studies Advisory Board. Members include representatives from major apparel, retail and textile products firms who support students with scholarships, internships and career placement.

Mansfield ISD’s high schools have a new way of promoting their school spirit, with student-designed custom debit cards issued by Texas Trust Credit Union.
The new card designs and winners of the design contest were unveiled during a Mansfield Spirit event Monday, May 21. Superintendent Dr. Bob Morrison publicly recognized the students at the unveiling ceremony.
Eighty three entries were received, representing students from each of the seven MISD high schools, including MISD’s newest high school, Lake Ridge, which will open this fall. The entries were narrowed down to 21 finalists, three from each school. The finalists were posted on Facebook during a six-day period when students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community voted for their favorite card design for each school. More than 28,000 votes were received via Facebook. The Facebook votes were combined with votes from a panel of judges.
Of the seven winners, five are seniors, one is a junior, and one is a sophomore. Each winner received $ 250 and a seat on the Texas Trust Youth Advisory Council. They also get to spend a day with the Texas Trust professional graphic designer and marketing team to learn more about the design profession. They are:
Hannah Gormley of Arlington, a sophomore at Mansfield Timberview High School. Her card design received 10,888 Facebook votes, along with high votes from the judges.
Jessilee Shipman, Mansfield, a junior at Mansfield Legacy High School, whose card design was for Mansfield Lake Ridge. Jessilee is a student leader in the school Art Club and an active member of the marching band. She plans to study photography and fine art in college.
Madison Samas of Mansfield, a senior at Mansfield High School, had 10,065 Facebook votes and high marks from the judges. Madison is an accomplished artist and was chosen to design the school’s literary magazine and curriculum guide. Madison’s goal is to become an animator for Disney or Pixar.
Senior Rachel Olgin’s design for Mansfield Frontier High School received 13,304 Facebook votes. She lives in Grand Prairie and will be attending UNT in the fall pursuing a degree in communication design.
Josh DuMond of Mansfield, the only male winner and a senior at Mansfield High School and Ben Barber Career Tech Academy, received high marks from the judges along with 10,151 Facebook votes.

Five hundred and twenty four members of the Class of 2012 received degrees during [Charter Oak State Colleges commencement ceremony held on Sunday, June 3, in Welte Auditorium at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. One hundred and eighty seven were in attendance, wearing environmentally-friendly caps and gowns. A live webcast of the ceremony was hosted on CharterOak.edu.
An honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, was presented to Doris G. Cassiday, a founder of Charter Oak State College and current Assistant Director of Academic Programs. Ms. Cassiday served as the first Chair for the Board for State Academic Awards, then as Vice-Chair and Secretary between 1973 and 1984. When the Charter Oak State College Foundation was created, she served as the first Foundation President and then as Executive Director from 1980-1995.
Charter Oak President, Ed Klonoski addressed the graduates. The student speaker was Tara M. Keating, who served as Student Representative and as an officer of the Student Association. The ceremony was webcast to graduates across the country who were unable to attend in person.
In his remarks, President Klonoski congratulated the graduates for taking on the challenge of completed their degree work while also handling the responsibilities of work and family.
Charter Oak grads are here because they decided to finish their degree. They started something, it got interrupted, and they were determined to make that dream come true, he said. We live in an age where such quiet quests are not celebrated. Instead, we celebrate overnight sensations, teenage millionaires, American idols, reality TV survivors, and stupid pet tricks. But what we are here to celebrate today is a group of people who made a commitment to their education, and stuck to that goal through family emergencies, computer problems, financial setbacks, and bad weather.
You are heroic because you refused to give up, refused to quit, refused to quietly abandon your dream. Like Odysseus, you may have taken a long time, but today you have made it home, he said.
Shirley Adams, Provost, Charter Oak State College, shared the following statistics regarding the Class of 2012.

These options include distance learning, testing, portfolio assessment, contract learning, military service school courses and other non-collegiate sponsored instruction, which has been evaluated for credit, as well as classroom instruction.

The festival exists to promote The Greer Campaigns mission of uniting fathers and uniting families on Fathers Day weekend.
The day will begin with a 5K and a one-mile Family March with Jabari Greer and the Jackson-Madison County Schools Drum Line All Stars. It also will include a family auction, childrens games and races for Special Needs Athletic participants and community heroes. The Lunch Box and Coca-Cola will serve food and drinks. WYN 106.9 West TN Idol/Texaco Country Showdown Finalists will take the stage at 1 p.m., followed at 2:30 p.m. by Castro, a finalist from American Idols seventh season. Music will continue as Saul 2 Paul and Eric Price perform before Greer and area sponsors announce the Paul Williams Father of the Year award. Smooth Jazz Progression will close out the celebration by filling the streets with music from 7:30 until 9 p.m.
